Welcome to the Practical STEAM Education course, designed to immerse educators in the hands-on, multidisciplinary world of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). As technology becomes increasingly integral to our daily lives, understanding and modifying it is essential. This course meets the growing demand for comprehensive STEAM education by combining digital skills with practical knowledge in materials, physics, and the design process.

Finland boasts the world’s longest history of craft and technology education in primary schools, spanning over 130 years. This rich legacy has evolved into the most versatile K12 STEAM education system, where students engage with a wide array of materials, tools, and machines to create and learn. By integrating digital fabrication and robotics with practical skills and tool handling, Finnish students gain the capabilities to understand and shape our physical and technological world.

Participants in the Practical STEAM Education course will gain insights into Finnish educational solutions through visits to schools, shop classes, and makerspaces. The highlight of the course is a four-day workshop at the Teijo Makerspace, where the emphasis is on learning by doing. This hands-on experience is designed to provide innovative methods and approaches that can be integrated into everyday teaching practices.

This course is ideal for school management, teachers, special needs educators, and other non-teaching experts and staff involved in school education, adult education, and vocational education and training (VET). Key topics covered include:

  • Emphasizing technology reading skills in tech education
  • Integrating digital fabrication with conventional tools and materials
  • Exploring Finnish solutions for safe and versatile technology education
  • Understanding the educational demands of digital fabrication hardware
  • Combining high technology with traditional craft knowledge
  • Individualizing STEAM education to meet diverse student needs
  • The role of Art in STEAM
  • Incorporating ecology and circular economy principles in technology projects
  • Enhancing STEAM teaching with practical toolkits
  • Creating a technology learning community within school environments

The course methodology focuses on creating tangible outputs. Participants will work individually or in groups on concrete products that can be implemented in their own schools. Trainers will provide continuous support throughout the week and beyond, ensuring the successful application of learned concepts.

Join us in this transformative journey to empower educators and students with the skills and knowledge to thrive in an ever-evolving technological landscape.
