The Finnish national curriculum aims to meet the needs of the rapidly changing world and provide children with skills and abilities to live a good life. It introduces phenomenal learning and seven core competences. 21st century teaching supports students’ growth into human beings and promotes the necessary skills for democratic membership in society and a sustainable way of life. The aim of education is to to encourage students to recognize their own strengths and talents as well as opportunities for development. 

The course provides you practical insight into phenomenal learning and the 21st century competences in Finland and answers questions such as:

  • What are the core competences in Finland and why are they considered important? 
  • How to enhance 21st  century teaching, learning and competence development in schools?

You will learn more about multiliteracy, entrepreneurship and other crucial competences taught in Finland via lectures, group work, assignments, peer learning and a visit to a Finnish school. You also get to enjoy a bit of Finnish culture, explore beautiful Helsinki and why not to experience sauna as well as have a dip in the sea too!

Melina Rauhala

Ms. Rauhala (B.A.) is an educational sciences student at the University of Turku with studies also in the fields of psychology, business and HR, and sociology. As an education major, she is passionate about lifelong learning and the Finnish education system. She believes in change through education. In addition, Ms. Rauhala loves to learn new languages.  She completed an Erasmus + university exchange in Spain as a part of her studies and wants to work toward everyone getting international learning opportunities. Ms. Rauhala is working for VisitEDUfinn part-time while finishing her studies.
